The rank and file within the police force was depleted, underfunded and under-resourced, and facing levels of criminality it was incapable of dealing with; morale was at an all-time low. This, of course, will sound only too familiar to POA members in our out-of-control workplaces.

As we take stock of the recent pay award that is yet again delayed, it has not been missed by anyone that closed grades are rightly angered and bitter about the employer’s recommendation – supported by the Pay Review Body and agreed by the Government– that they will not receive any award now or in the future.

Annual conference 2023 was a positive and enjoyable experience, in my view. However, as the cover of this issue of Gatelodge demonstrates, not everyone was happy.
