Following the application of the pay deal in 2017/18 (the pay deal previous to the current 3 year deal) the POA raised an issue with SPS about a group of recently promoted FLM’s that we believed had been disadvantaged due to the movement of the pay date from October to April.

When I became the POA General Secretary in May 2010 there had been five previous General Secretaries since 1939 those being Harley Cronin, Fred Castell, Ken Daniel, David Evans, Brian Caton.

This pandemic of COVID-19 is far from over as we have witnessed with further local lockdowns in our communities and indeed those on the brink of lockdown. 

POA Circular 105/2020 was recently promulgated and highlighted the successes that our legal provider, Thompsons Solicitors had achieved for our members in 2019. In that year £4.5 million was paid out to our members in compensation for a range of claims.

The POA ran a pilot scheme with the Firefighters Charity in 2008 which focuses on rehabilitation services for POA members and in 2009 I negotiated a contract with them which sends POA members in their time of need for rehabilitation at their centres.

The Government have announced a 2.5% consolidated pay award for all band 2-5 staff both closed grades and fair and sustainable. This will be backdated to April 1st and paid in Septembers salary.

You will no doubt be aware of the latest communication in relation to the pension consultation, that comes in response to the McLeod judgement for discrimination on pension provision for some effected members.
