John Cairney, Scottish National Committee Chair reports on the Scottish pay ballot

The POA trade union represents members who work on contracts supporting Immigration Services and Border Force Officers across the United Kingdom and France.

Since the last edition of Gatelodge a number of Legal Claims have been progressed for POA members by Thompsons and the POA Legal Department. Compensation totalling over £277,780 in 25 cases has been awarded to our members.

Joe Simpson reports on the ongoing issue of carrying aids for frontline staff

One Wednesday evening a couple of weeks ago our Branch secretary Jordan, phoned me to tell that the Government Legal Department (GLD) had notified him that they had declined to represent four of our members at an inquest at Nottinghamshire Coroner’s Court because their evidence was likely to conflict with the GLD. line. ‘You mean the inquest coming up in November?’ I replied. ‘No the one coming up on Monday,’ he said. ‘What?’ I replied.

 

We are incredibly saddened to report the passing of John Shannon who was one of our HLM’s in Scotland. John had been ill for some time following a diagnosis of terminal cancer, but his death came as a shock to everyone, given how well he had been doing and was still incredibly active and in good spirits.

Earlier in the year I was interviewed by the Prison Service Journal and asked to offer my thoughts on how the service had managed during the pandemic.
