The BAEM Conference was a well-attended and lively event, and was greatly enhanced by the POA contribution of Peter Teibowei, who seconded a motion on the treatment of BAEM prison officers in the workplace. This was delivered with passion by Peter Teibowei and what became clear in the lively debate that followed was that this is an issue that effects large numbers of BAEM trade union members, regardless of what sectors they work in and where they work.
Bianca Haynes, who was part of the POA delegation, had the following to say: "I would like to express my gratitude in being able to attend the Black Worker’s Conference this year. This was my first time attending and I was left extremely impressed by it all. I had never previously had the opportunity to meet and associate with so many trade unionists from other industries/professions, and I was somewhat surprised to learn that a lot of us are going through the same trials, although, at the same time, these shared experiences are what brought us together."
In my opinion, the conference was well organised, all motions received equal attention, and all speakers were given an adequate and fair platform.
It was so refreshing to be in a room and not feel outnumbered or invisible. Everyone was welcoming, and I am sure everyone felt heard, seen and respected. That weekend left me feeling greatly empowered.
Zahir Hussein, who was also part of the POA delegation, had this to say: "The Black Workers Conference was a transformative experience that provided valuable insights, connections and inspiration. It underscored the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and equipped me with the tools and motivation to make a positive impact. I am committed to applying the knowledge gained from this conference to foster a more inclusive and equitable professional environment."
There will be the opportunity for BAEM POA members to attend the 2025 Conference, which will take place in June. So, if you wish to be a delegate, watch out for the circular. l
