CIRC 085: YOUNG TRADE UNIONISTS’ MAY DAY BRIGADE TO CUBA 2025

As part of the POA International work which has been approved by Annual Conference, Cuba solidarity have invited the POA to send young trade unionists to Cuba May Day in 2025. This is open to POA members between the age of 18-35. The POA will be choosing 2 POA members to attend who are branch committee members or indeed POA members. Please note you will have to take your own annual leave, but the trip itself will not cost you anything.

The Brigade to Cuba is an amazing opportunity for young members to join Cuba’s May Day celebrations, participate in international solidarity events and practical solidarity work. It also provides a unique opportunity to meet activists from all over the country and the world.

The Brigade will feature a full programme of activities including;

  • Special invitations from the Cuban trade unions to take part in the May Day celebrations at Havana’s Revolution Square and the International Solidarity with Cuba Conference in Cuba’s Parliament (Convention Palace).
  • Meeting with Cuban trade unionists, women’s organisations and community groups;
  • Solidarity agricultural work on Cuban cooperative farms;
  • Visits to sites of historical, political and cultural significance;
  • Seminars, workshops and film showing on Cuban society and much more.

Nearly 500 young trade unionists from Unite, Unison, GMB, RMT, ASLEF, TSSA, CWU, TSSA, FBU, PCS and NAPO have participated over the last 17 years. The Brigade has inspired many to become involved in international solidarity work and many have returned inspired to become increasingly active in their trade union.

The final Brigade dates are still to be confirmed by Cuba solidarity, but it should be the last week of April 2025 and the first week of May 2025.

Applications need to be sent to nicola@ poauk.org.uk stating why you are interested in this delegation no later than Friday 15th November 2024.

Yours sincerely
