CIRC 087: GENERAL FEDERATION OF TRADE UNIONS EDUCATION PROGRAMME 2024 – 2025

The POA aims to provide learning opportunities for members. The POA ensures that its work in engaging staff in life-long learning is exemplary. The POA works in partnership with various employers and appropriate organisations who can support the POA in engaging members in accessing learning across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales or areas where POA members work. The General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) is one such partner who continue to develop educational courses for Trade Unionists who are affiliates of the GFTU.

POA Circular 50/2024 outlined the benefits of courses provided by GFTU to POA members. I am proud to say that our members have accessed the following courses during 2024:

Workplace Reps Stage 1 – 6 attendees

Workplace Reps Stage 2 – 2 attendees

Health and Safety Stage 1 – 20 attendees

Health and Safety Stage 2 – 11 attendees

Roots of Racism – 7 attendees

Employment Law – 2 attendees

Women in Leadership – 5 attendees

Sexual Harassment – 2 attendees

Summer School – 3 attendees

Politics - 2 attendees

Trade Union Movement – 1 attendee

Young Members- 1 attendee

These numbers show the value of the new Educational Fund, set up following the adoption of Conference Paper 2, 2024 and the adoption of motion 70/2023, giving the Executive permission to look at a feasibility study of suitable education on political training to ensure we are planning for the future of the POA over the course of the next 10 years and beyond that.

As an affiliate of the GFTU, POA members are entitled to attend the majority of courses for free. Please find attached a full programme. This is all viewable online, and applications can be made here: https://gftuet.org.uk/education

Travel and subsistence will be paid in the normal manner. Any accommodation costs as a result of attending a residential course will be met by GFTU. Facility time has not been granted for attendance on these courses and members will have to attend in their own time.

Please bring this circular to the attention of all members.

Thank you for your anticipated support.

Yours sincerely

MICK PIMBLETT
Acting Deputy General Secretary
