CIRC 079: DEPUTY GENERAL SECRETARY POSITION

This was always going to be a difficult situation as I did not want to appear to be insensitive to the passing of Joe Simpson Deputy General Secretary and advertising the vacant position. Prior to his passing over a period of many months Joe and I discussed contingency plans even although they were very difficult to discuss but Joe always insisted that the POA continues with its business.

However, as a mark of respect I have also discussed the issue with his partner and got the all clear to set a timetable for the election of a Deputy General Secretary. I attach the terms and conditions for the position and how long it is for along with the timetable for that election.

In the meantime, I will be acting up Mick Pimblett Assistant General Secretary to the position of Deputy General Secretary on a temporary basis until we get an outcome in the election process. I am content that I am acting within the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 in acting someone up to discharge some of the functions of the role until such time as a successor is duly elected.

I have decided due to the volume of work that Mick Pimblett will be the acting Deputy General Secretary from Monday 21st October 2024.

Yours sincerely

STEVE GILLAN
General Secretary
