H&S CIRC:004: PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

We have recently been in talks with HMPPS Health & Safety staff over the dates on the PPE which is used for cell removal.

As a matter of urgency can you please: -

  • Check all dates on the PPE to see if it is within date. If it is out-of-date, please inform your governor and insist that it is replaced immediately.
  • Ask for the cleaning schedule for the overalls. Overalls must only be washed a maximum of 20 times; they must then be replaced.
  • Ask for the Safe System of Work and Risk Assessment for the helmets should they receive a blow from a violent prisoner or be dropped. If a helmet does receive a blow or is dropped it must be replaced.
  • If your Governor refuses to replace any out-of-date equipment or fails to provide the requested documents please contact Jackie Marshall, who will escalate your case to the department’s national H&S team.

Jackie Marshall’s email is jackie.marshall@poauk.org.uk

Thank you for your anticipated support.

Yours sincerely

MICK PIMBLETT
Deputy General Secretary
