Following the issuing of Branch Circular 10/2026 relating to the political levy, we have received several enquiries seeking clarification.
We hope the information below helps explain what the political levy is – and what it is not.
WHAT IS A POLITICAL LEVY?
The POA political levy is a small contribution included within our monthly subscription. It is used to support campaigns and lobbying work undertaken by the POA on behalf of the membership.
This work often relates to issues of significant importance, such as workers’ rights legislation, retirement age challenges, and other employment-related matters affecting our members.
DOES ANY OF IT GO TO ANY POLITICAL PARTY?
No. Although it is referred to as a political levy, the term simply reflects that the funds are used for trade union political purposes.
The POA is not affiliated with any political party and does not make donations to any political party.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
The levy amounts to 15p per month and is included within the overall subscription paid each month. It is not collected as a separate payment.
IS THIS IMPORTANT TO THE TRADE UNION?
Yes. The political levy enables the union to carry out important campaigning and lobbying activity on behalf of members, including supporting legal challenges where appropriate.
DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FUND?
No action is required. The recent legislative changes are being highlighted for awareness. Members are automatically included in contributing to the political levy unless they choose to opt out.
If you require any further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
Yours sincerely,
PHIL FAIRLIE
