PR 309: MPs REPORT ON PRISONS IN WALES CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO COLLECT DUST SAYS UNION

A report by an influential House of Commons committee into “Prisons, Probation and Rehabilitation” in Wales must result in its recommendations being implemented and cannot be allowed to sit on a shelf collecting dust, the Union representing the UK’s Prison Officers has said. 

The “Jagged Justice” Report from the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Select Committee calls on the Ministry of Justice to take urgent action to address multiple problems across the Prison Estate. 

 

Commenting on the report Mick Pimblett Deputy General Secretary said:

“This Report confirms what our members have been telling successive Governments for years. 

We need more experienced staff working closely with offenders, building relationships, improving their educational attainment and health outcomes. This is a pre-requisite for reducing the higher rates of offending we see in Wales.

We agree with many of the issues raised in this comprehensive report, but it cannot be ignored like so many other reports into the justice system over the last two decades and more. 

If we are going to have Prisons fit for the 21st century then we need more staff, sustained and increased investment and an urgent recognition that without such an approach then the situation in Wales and across the UK will not improve.”
